Kris is correct about the difficulty in distinguishing what to confront and what to avoid. This entails the formation of conscience, whose root meaning is "knowledge shared with' others. We all belong to traditions and communities which inevitably contribute to or impair the formation of our conscience. There were false prophets in the Jewish tradition. R.A.F. MacKenzie, S.J., former Rector of the Pontifical Biblical Institute held that for every true prophet in Israel there were a hundred false ones. Lonergan spoke of elements of inauthenticity in the Catholic tradition. Cardinal Martini spoke of the difficulty in discerning the will of God.
