Additionally, you wrote about the "the inner demons" and in my mind came again the so called "seven deadly sins" (envy, greed, etc.).  The concept of theses "seven deadly sins" or "capital vices" is older than Christianity.  It roots back to Aristotle and the Stoics who also taught about affectivity.  In my (Catholic) College I teach philosophy and business ethics.  In business ethics we also watch some business ethics movies (for example "Wall Street", here the famous thesis by corporate raider Gordon Gekko is "Greed is good!"), also to experience the emotional side.  There I always ask my students whether they recognized the so called "seven deadly sins"/"capital vices" and they always see them all in almost every movie!  We see, the context is very modern.  It was my friend, the German philosopher Dr. Gerd B. Achenbach, the founder of the worldwide first Philosophical Practice, who wrote about the "seven deadly sins" because many visitors of his Philosophical Practice (desperate housewifes, students, Catholic priests [sic!], physicians, managers, etc.) are suffering from nothing else than these "seven deadly sins" without recognizing that.  Wow!  Psychologists don't diagnose these things today. because they work on another human dimension, namely the psychologial dimension only.  But Achenbach working on the noetic/spiritual dimension of man does, despite the fact that he is not a theologian, "only" a philosopher.  Therefore, I think the discernment of the spirits (German: "Unterscheidung der Geister") dealing with envy (and all the other capital vices) is still very important for today.  Here Christotherapy (Logotherapy, [Christian] Philosophical Practice) who applies this spiritual exercise is an important and powerful tool for tooday's people suffering from these capital vices without knowing them.  I am very happy to had Fr. Michael Schneider SJ ("Das neue Leben") as my spiritual adviser during my studies at the German Jesuit University Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt.  There I learned about Ignatius' Spiritual Exercises and more.  What a treasure for living a meaningful life!
