John, you mean Hans Urs von Balthasar (spelling!).  Yes he was Swiss, spoke and wrote in German - and he was a very good friend of Viktor E. Frankl (another great surprise for most theologians! Frankl met not only Rahner but also von Balthasar, another great Catholic theologian of the 20th century!).  In their younger years von Balthasar and Frankl had the same mentor, namely Rudolf Allers, a Catholic philosopher and psychiatrist. Later von Balthasar praised Frankl's Logotherapy in his book "Homo creatus est" (Einsiedeln 1986).
